Internal hemorrhoid banding, also known as rubber band ligation, is the safest treatment option for internal hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in the rectum or anus that can cause discomfort, bleeding, and itching.
During banding, our Houston hemorrhoid Center specialists use a special instrument to place a small rubber band around the base of the internal hemorrhoid. This cuts off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid, causing it to shrink and eventually fall off. The procedure is performed in the office. It takes less than 5 minutes. Hemorrhoid banding is a reliable treatment for most cases of symptomatic internal hemorrhoids.
Here is an overview of the process:
- Preparation: Patient is advised to increase fiber in diet as well water consumption to soften the stool and reduce straining during bowel movements.
- Procedure: The hemorrhoid specialist will first use an anoscope to visualize the internal hemorrhoid and inspect the anorectal mucosa. A special device is then used to place a rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid. This restricts blood flow, leading to the hemorrhoid shrinking over time.
- Recovery: Hemorrhoid banding is painless. Patients go back to work immediately after banding.
- Follow-up: A total of 3 sessions of banding are needed to treat hemorrhoids effectively. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor progress and address any concerns.
