Hemorrhoids in Women

Pregnancy increases the chances of developing hemorrhoid disease in women. Progesterone hormone rises during pregnancy. Progesterone relaxes muscles of uterus and blood vessels.

Relaxed blood vessels in the rectum dilate. The dilation is particularly exacerbated by the increased pressure in the area secondary to the growing uterus. Hemorrhoids are dilated or swollen blood vessels, (veins) of the anus and lower rectum.

Furthermore, progesterone relaxes colon muscles that are responsible for colon contractions. Decreased colonic contractions causes constipation. Constipation and straining during bowel movement favors hemorrhoid development and growth.

Common Hemorrhoid Symptoms in Pregnant Women

For these reasons, hemorrhoid disease is very common during pregnancy especially during the third trimester. Symptoms include bleeding, irritation, itching, discomfort and pain.

Treatment with Sitz baths, and topical creams can help alleviate severity of symptoms. Drinking plenty of water and increasing fiber intake is highly recommended to prevent and treat hemorrhoids.

Is Hemorrhoid Banding Safe During Pregnancy?

Hemorrhoid banding is recommended after delivery. During pregnancy, hemorrhoid banding may increase the risk of premature labor.

If you suffer from hemorrhoid disease and you are planning to get pregnant, hemorrhoid banding is recommended prior to pregnancy. Hemorrhoid banding is safe, reliable and pain free.
